Journal 18/10/12

In todays lesson, we were getting together our pitches and then presenting them to the class. Whilst adding the finishing touches to our pitches, Billy and I decided that Island Records was definitely the record label we were looking to sign our band with. The reasons being for this is that they signed Pulp (a band that our band aspires to be like) and Bombay Bicycle Club (a more modern band that we could compare our band to) so we feel that throughout the ages Island Records has done well for bands much like ours.
Island records hace quite a collective mix of artists they have signed, considering they have Tulisa and Mcfly on their homepage. This is a good thing for our band, considering that we have quite a different genre of music it's good to know that the record label (who in turn control everything to do with the band and their image) are very open to all different idea's within different genres - which could work with the image of our band and the freedom they will have to make the image their own. Our band being able to create their own image is an important factor, we don't want the band to seem like a 'sell out' band, so having an open minded label is very important to the development of the band.
The feedback we got was very good, with very constructive criticism that has given us a lot to think about. We were asked to consider changing our primary target audience, which once we discussed actually seemed like a very good idea. We were asked to consider getting a very clear idea of what our video would look like and how the narrative would go and we were asked to consider the links between some of the shots we would be looking at. We feel that maybe we didn't quite get our idea across in the pitch as well as we could have, which left the class confused and so we are going to really think about how we are going to make the video. All of the feedback has really cleared up the priorities we have at this point as a group and we definitely have some things to work on, that will eventually benefit our music video.
